Fire Prevention

Mission Statement

The Shreveport Fire Prevention Division is committed to reducing the loss of life and property in our community by providing the highest level of service through effective education, inspections, and investigations.

Education

Fire Prevention Officers prepare and present proactive, dynamic, and relevant fire and life safety educational programs for schools, businesses, civic organizations, and other citizen groups. They partner with outside organizations and other divisions of the fire department for the dissemination of important fire prevention messages, coordinate the department’s free smoke alarm installation program, and perform courtesy home fire safety assessments.

Inspections

Fire Prevention Officers enforce codes, ordinances, and state statutes to ensure structures are safe for citizens to occupy. They perform plan review for new construction and alterations of existing buildings, review various permit applications, and investigate complaints and impairments relating to fire and life safety deficiencies.

Investigations

Fire Prevention Officers are POST certified peace officers who conduct origin and cause determination investigations for structure and vehicle fires and make arrests for related crimes. They are members of the Bomb Squad and respond to bomb threats, suspicious packages, and other hazardous devices within Caddo Parish.
